What is SG?
Student Government, or SG, is a team of motivated and enthusiastic students, guided by the principles of legality, democracy, transparency, openness, self-governance and voluntariness. Independent in its nature, SG provides representation to the students' voice and works on implementation of student-led initiatives within and outside of Nazarbayev University.

Our main goal is to involve students into the decision-making, management, and governing processes of the University, for the sake of protection and proper representation of students' rights and opinions. We direct our work to many areas, such as academic and professional development of students, social and sport activities, health and residential matters, and many others.
Structure
Three main branches of the Student Government
The Executive Body (EB), or Executive Board, is a branch headed by the President, and includes Vice-President, Chief of Staff, and Heads and Members of the Cabinet. The Advisory Body is a representative branch of the Student Government with two respective levels: Student Unions (representatives of each School) and School Student Councils (representatives from each major and cohort). There are two independent Committees in the Student Government:

  • The Student Rights Committee (SRC) is charged with protection of rights and reinforcement of responsibilities of NU students, as well as representation of students' voice in University-level hearings. Read more...

  • The Student Fund Budget Committee (SFBC) is in charge of allocation of money from the Student Fund to student clubs and organizations, as well as sponsoring other student-led initiatives. Read more...
Executive Board
The Executive Board of the Student Government is led by the President and consists of Vice-President, Chief of Staff, and the Cabinet.

The President is elected annually for the period of one year among all active students of the University by voting (more on Presidential Elections here).

Vice-President, Chief of Staff and Heads of the Cabinet (Ministers) are recruited by the President after inauguration for the period of one year via open application process.

Chief of Staff is in charge of the Office of Internal Management and is responsible for recruitment of its members.

Cabinet consists of 7 ministries. Members of the Cabinet are recruited by Ministers for the period of one academic year.

WHAT DO WE DO?

The Advisory Body of the Student Government has several main functions:

Firstly, this is the main representative student body; it is charged with acting on behalf of all students during School-level discussions, i.e. syllabuses and courses, academic quality, program or curriculum changes, etc. Members of the Advisory Body are appointed as voting-members to School-level committees.
Secondly, being an advisory body to the Executive Board, it is responsible for reviewing and providing feedback on student- or administration-led initiatives in areas including but not limited to academic programs, social and campus life, sport and health matters.

Three (3) main entities relevant to the Body's work are Executive Board of the Student Government, School Offices and School Managers, Academic Quality Office of the Office of the Provost.

Student Representatives
Each major and cohort must elect a student to represent their position and perspective in all the decision-making processes.

School Student Councils (SSCs)
Each SSC includes all Student Representatives from the given School who are responsible for student engagement at the School level.

Gr and UG Student Unions
Unions include one Gr and UG representatives - one from each SSC. They are responsible for cooperation among Schools, as well as with the Executive Body of the Student Government.
